What’s considered a dental emergency?

Toothaches.

Toothaches are usually caused by decay, infection or inflamed gums. Their pain can be mild to extreme. Even if you can soothe the pain at home, untreated toothaches can worsen over time and may lead to serious infections in the tooth, gum disease or even bone loss. To prevent the spread of infection, we recommend you see a Gold Coast emergency dentist as soon as possible.

If your toothache pain is extreme
Severe dental pain is often associated with an infected or abscessed tooth and may require immediate treatment like antibiotics, dental extraction or a root canal. If your pain is extreme, call us as soon as possible. Painkillers may be necessary until you can come in to see us; and apply an ice pack to the area to relieve your pain while you wait to be treated. If you have swelling of your face, we recommend that you contact us urgently as this can be life threatening.

Broken or Cracked Tooth.

Sports, pork crackle, missing a step, a silly accident – there are many ways to chip or crack a tooth! No matter how it happens, it’s never fun.

If you have a broken or cracked tooth, or you have lost or damaged a filling, you must see an emergency dentist on the Gold Coast straight away. If left untreated, a chipped tooth or cracked tooth will create a space for dental decay to develop which can seriously damage the dental pulp – leading to severe and painful toothaches.

If the tooth is sensitive to touch, or to air or water, this is a critical sign to seek immediate help.

Wisdom Teeth.

Problematic wisdom teeth are usually seen in patients age 16 and older. Even though wisdom teeth are natural and not everyone needs to get them removed, crowding and misaligned wisdom teeth can become painful and may need removal – especially if they are infected.

Signs of a wisdom tooth emergency
Your wisdom teeth are the furthest back teeth in the mouth, located behind your back molars, both on the top and bottom of your jaw. If you can see red or swollen gums, tenderness or bleeding; or if you are experiencing swelling or jaw pain at all in the area behind your last molars – you may need an emergency wisdom tooth removal. Do not delay as wisdom teeth can cause major complication to your jaw bone and even damage your other teeth. We recommend that you call an our Gold Coast emergency dentists ASAP before further complications develop.

Visit your dentist, not the hospital.

Hospital emergency rooms are often not the place for dental treatment. It is important to seek relevant dental emergency care without delay. Our Burleigh emergency dentist is open to all of the people of the Gold Coast. If you have a dental emergency, we are here for you.

For dental emergencies such as a severe toothache, a chipped tooth or cracked tooth, or if you need an emergency wisdom tooth removal we are prepared to treat your dental emergency faster and better than the hospital emergency room can.

FAQs

Can I call in the night after hours?

Yes, of course. A dental emergency can happen at any moment and if you are in distress you can call us. You can also book an appointment online for the next morning. Our standard hours are Monday-Sunday 8:30am to 5:30pm however we offer after hours, weekend and public holiday appointments to help you with any type of dental emergency.

What should I do while waiting for treatment?

The most important thing you can do while waiting for the treatment of a dental emergency is to stay calm. If you are feeling confused or worried, give us a call – we will talk you through it and get you sorted. If your pain is mild to medium, over the counter pain relief like Nurofen (ibuprofen) or Panadol (paracetamol) may help to reduce the pain. Applying a cold press to the area (such as a bag of ice) can also relieve pain and swelling. If you are in extreme pain and are unable to sleep please call us immediately.
